Jared Stock: Wide Open

IMG_2061                Stock is a privateer pro racer, down to earth and looking forward to another ripping summer. Like many, he was on the edge of his seat regarding the CMRC's new ruling on two strokes. For those not aware, the CMRC was considering a rule change for the 2012 season allowing 250 two strokes to compete with the 250f four strokes. Unfortunately for Jared, and others, the rule applied only to the amateur classes and Intermediate classed riders racing in the Pro/Am MX2 class.

Jared started riding when he was four years old, brought into it in the natural way: his dad was into it. Of course, the family connection doesn't stop there. Jared's sister, Lacy, is also a motocrosser.

When asked about sibling rivalry, Jared usually laughs. "Yeah, there's no sibling rivalry, that she knows of!...  I secretly read through each issue of Inside MotoX & Off Road to see who used the biggest words, but yeah, when it comes to riding there really isn't any rivalry between us, just a lot of support." Sorry, Jared, but you're busted!IMG_8110

Stock spends his winters, and they are long in the prairies, or so I'm told, working in the oil fields as a rigger. "I've been doing it for the last four years," he says. "It's hard work, but the hard work pays off when I can spend the summer racing and doing what I love."

When he isn't racing, or working the oil rig, the young rider ekes out a little time for himself and family. "Obviously family is really important," he says. "They're my support and pit crew and, like so many guys I know, growing up there was no bigger hero than my dad. They taught me hard work and perseverance is the way to success. If something is worth having, it's worth working for, right?" he laughs.

The hard driven rider has seen his share of down falls and injuries, but isn't willing to give up. "I'm lucky I have so many great sponsors: Southland Powersports, Shift Canada, Vanquish, Kermaxx, FMF, Sosa, Inside MotoX & Off Road and Elemental Fitness."

20 Questions with Jared Stock:

1) Name:

Jared Stock

2) Bike (Year/Brand/Model):

YZ450F or if the rule is passed YZ250! 2 Stroke!

3) Home town:

Medicine Hat, Alberta

4) Hero growing up (can be riding or not):

Obviously my Dad!

5) Favourite Rider:

My favourite retired rider is Ross Pederson, but I love to watch (James) Stewart shredding it up in Outdoors or Supercross!

6) Most satisfying racing moment:IMG_8135

It definitely had to be winning the Intermediate championships at the Western Canadian Amateur Nationals in 2009. The feeling you get the moment when you get to hold a number one plate and realize all your work just paid off... It is just priceless. Nothing in the sport compares to the rush of holding a hard earned #1 plate.

7) Least satisfying racing moment:

Sand del Lee 2011. I DNF'd both motos 3/4's of the way through due to fuel pump failures. Not fun. Not cool.

8) One thing you could not race without:

My family. They are my support system and my pit crew.

9) When you aren't racing, you are...

Working on a drilling rig.

IMG_971310) If you didn't race dirt bikes, you would...

*laughs* Be a very wealthy man.

11) If you could re-do one moto from 2011, which one, why and what would you do differently?

It’d have to be moto 2 at Sand del Lee. I would have swapped gas tanks in between motos, it probably would have meant the difference between finishing and a second DNF.

12) What song gets you pumped to ride?

Usually a good ripper of the punk rock variety.

13) Do you have any pre-race traditions? (If so, what are they?)

I usually just take a moment to sit by myself and be quiet.

14) When you grow up, what do you want to be?IMG_7774

A motocross icon! *laughs* And if that fails I am going to school for petroleum engineering. They aren’t exactly linked, but one or the other works for me! Haha

15) If you could travel anywhere and ride, where would you go?

I would travel the whole world with a dirt bike. I would bring a Video camera and make the greatest moto video ever!

16) What event have you not done but wish to do?

I would like to race the USGP at Glen Helen.

17) Chevy or Ford?

Tough call. My Chevy trucks have been good. But my trusty Ford Econoline has gotten me though a lot of nights without hotel rooms! Can I just say both?

We’ll give that one to you, Jared. - Suzie

18) The best thing about being a racer is...

Getting to race all over the country, and potentially in the US and outside of North America as well. There’s also a huge sense of satisfaction when you know all your hard work has paid off; it’s hard to duplicate that feeling of accomplishment.

19) The worst thing about being a racer is...

Not being that wealthy man I listed above. *laughs* Dirt biking is expensive!

20) The best thing to happen to you in 2011?

Motocross related it would have to be leading the pack in Moto 2 in Kamloops, even if it was only for 3 corners. *laughs* Other than that spending the first full year with my girlfriend Taylor has been amazing.
