Fresh faced, the newly turned 18 year old is looking forward to the 2012 season. He'll be throwing his number plate into the Pro arena, contesting the super competitive E2 class against Bobby Prochnau and Jason Schrage.
What are you up to these days?
Not much. I've been playing a lot of hockey and working out as much as I can. I'm in grade 12 and work part time, so it's not like I'm ever just doing nothing, really.
Grade 12? So you're graduating in June, any plans?
Yeah, hard to believe, eh? I'm thinking I'm going to go to school for petroleum engineering. It's a good career in Alberta so I think it's a good way to go.
How did you get into riding?
Well, my dad knew I wanted to ride, and he bought me my first bike when I was 7. I remember it really clear. I was out riding my pedal bike and my dad called me back home and he had this sweet 1982 XR80 waiting for me. He knew I had always wanted a bike. So yeah, it all started there.
Who was your biggest hero growing up?
Um, wow. That's a hard question. I mean, all around it'd have to be my dad. He's always been there, and working hard. He gets a lot done. He's a real role model.
What's the best part of working with the CGRT (Corner Grass Race Team) guys?
Well, this will be my third year with the guys and I gotta say it's just helped bring everything to a whole different level. I've got so much support with them and the sponsors. They're amazing mentors; they've raced everywhere! They've also helped me bring up my game on the bike, and turn up the intensity on my fitness program. It's just been really great.
What was your biggest accomplishment of 2011?
Oh wow, what's with the hard questions? *laugh* Well, I'm torn. I've got two that I'm super pumped and proud about. The first was being the top junior, again, at Xtinction, and getting that big cheque. The second was wining the WEC Eastern Amateur A title; that was pretty cool.
You rode amazing this year, bud. Lots to be proud of.
Haha. Thanks.
So, any decision about Pro?
Funny you should ask! I just found out that I'll be racing Pro in the CMRC races at home here in Alberta and at the WEC.
Congratulations!
Thanks! I don't know how it's going to work out. I mean I really just found out! *laughs*
I'm sure you'll do fine. Any goals? Or am I putting you on the spot too much?
*laughs* Well, I guess I'd like to be in the top ten at least once, and just ride consistent. I'd like the season to be successful and injury free.
I'm sure you'll do fine.
Thanks. It's a big class, so I'm going to focus more on just doing well in E2.
So that's a top ten in E2?
*laughs* Yeah.
That would put you in line for top Pro junior.
Yeah, that'd be awesome. It's a good goal; I'll go with that one too.
How'd you do at home this year?
Well, I didn't make it to too many CMRC hare scrambles, but I won Expert in the CMA series, so that was cool.
Just for fun, your favourite place you've raced?
What did I say about the tough questions! Naw, the Idaho City 100 in Boise, Idaho had to be one of the best races I've done. Real fun.
How are you preparing for the upcoming season?
Well, I don't have a bike right now, so I'm just hitting the gym and working out as much as I can. I'm also playing a lot of hockey, and finishing up grade 12 so I've got enough on my plate I think for now.
Anyone you'd like to thank, in addition to the CGRT sponsors?
Well, my Dad for sure, and Mom. My dad came out east with me this year and really, it would have been so much harder without him. But Lee, Shane, Jay and Nick make it easier, they're like one big support network. Dave French from A&E, he's one of our sponsors but also goes above and beyond; he's definitely in it for the love of the game.
One last question: Who's better at remembering CGRT's extensive sponsor list, you or Ben (Rego)?
Oh man! *laughs* Definitely me! What is it? CCRT? CRT? GCRT? Sorry Rego! *laughs*
Thanks so much for your time.
Not a problem. Any time!
Cole would like to thank Lee, Shane, Nick, Jay and the whole Corner Grass Race Team for their support this year and he's looking forward to year 3 with them. He'd also like to thank Mom and Dad and the team sponsors: Husaberg Canada, Royal Distributing, Parts Canada, Thor, Alpinestar, Smith Optics, FMF, PG Graphics, Dunlop, Enduro Engineering, Ross Rocher Sales, A&E Racing and Marine, Kermaxx, Rekluse, UFA, and Xtreme Hot Oil.
