Bringing in the Summer

Well the last two rounds of the CMRC Atlantic MX Spring Series have come to an end here on the East Coast with two amazing weekends on two of our premier tracks in the Atlantic Region. The second last round took place only 40 minutess from my home in Brookfield N.S. at Mitch Cooke's Pleasant Valley MX. The last round of the series saw most riders make the trip across the water to Prince Edward Island, this is our only stop on the island in 2012 however it is host to one of the most amazing tracks on the circuit.

The Saturday before race day at PVMX we saw some rain role in and give the track a good soaking. You would think this would be a bad thing but with an extremely dry hot summer among us it was a welcomed site and made the track absolutely perfect on Sunday morning as we all suited up to hit the track for practice. We really couldn’t have asked for much better riding conditions it was a little overcast and cooler then normal which made it nice to ride.

By moto 1 the sun had come out and temperature was rising to reveal what was sure to be a real hot day. Every moto that left the gate was jam packed with hard riding and intense battles throughout the field. Wide Open Racing rider Logan Gallant unfortunately could not continue his hole shot streak but managed to battle through the pack to take both MX2 Junior moto wins even after 2 red flags in moto one extending his championship points lead. Being such a fast wide open track my 250F was a definite disadvantage on the smooth track in our first ProGP Moto but in our last moto of the day when the track was rough and 20min motos seemed to never end the 250F showed it strengths once again with TJ Martin & I battling the entire moto passing each other back and forth a good 7 or 8 times, all of the fans and riders said it was quite a show.

After a watering system failure the track was getting pretty dusty but thanks to the rain on Saturday we were able to get through our entire day of racing. It was also great to see a long time friend Drew Bezanson who showed up to watch some motos, it was awesome to here Drew talk about taking his RedBull, Fox, DK BMX Bikes ride to a 5th Place finish the previous weekend at Summer X-Games.

If you want to ride a fast, wide, GP style track Mudrooters MX Park in PEI is the place to go, with big rolling jumps and 4th – 5th gear wide open straits this track makes for some incredible racing and is probably the best place to finish off a series since it really levels out the playing field. Logan Gallant wrapped up his MX2 Junior Championship after moto one and finished second overall in School Boy after having a battle with the champion Ryan Mackay.

Chelsey Hall had a solid 3-3 finish overall on the day to clinch a 3rd place spot in the championship. I decided to run the Youth class as well as ProGP this weekend and the after battling in every moto it was defiantly worth it! In the first Youth moto Jason Gray & I were having an epic battle when a freshly watered section caused us to make contact and send him flying off the inside berm, over top of Brandon Carters head and off the track into the woods, thankfully Jason didn’t crash and whipped right back onto the track and continued to battle hard.

In the last ProGP moto TJ & I found each other once again on the track, and battled the whole moto. Unfortunately after making a bobble his 450 got the best of me on a big uphill. Luckily I was able to stay with him and make it a battle to the finish.

Some of the biggest news at Mudrooters was Wide Open Racing’s new addition 4-6 50cc rider Hugh Henderson. After a bike failure in moto 1 Hugh hoped on a loaner bike and finished 4th in moto 2 clinching his first ever championship. Hugh shows lots of promise and speed and is looking to come out strong again in the fall series. Wide Open Racing is happy to have him on the team and is looking forward to working with him in years to come!

Riverglade Nationals in Moncton N.B., are this coming weekend and are sure to be a show; any riders or fans who love the smell of race fuel and watching bikes fly through the air and battle for 30+min at a time should defiantly come and check it out! See you all there and watch for my next blog following the event.
