Round One of the 2012 Wiesner Insurance Ontario Cross Country Championship Presented by Apex Cycle / KTM took place this past weekend under perfect weather and course conditions. The Pro podium was dominated by KTM mounted riders with Josh Long taking the win followed by Kevin Cockayne in second and Greg Filer in third. All these Pros received their share of the pro purse taking home cash for their Pro efforts.

Kevin Cockayne continued his dominance of the race start by taking the first $100 Wiesner Insurance Holeshot Award of the 2012 season. There were more than a couple of spectators curious to see if he could continue his holeshot dominance as he has switched to the four stroke 350XF for this year. When asked on the podium about this he calmly responded by saying “As long as it’s a KTM it will get to the first turn before anyone.”

New this year is our Royal Distributing “Fastest at Halfway Award” that is given to whoever is leading the Pro Class at the half way point of the race. Josh Long was the first rider to collect $50 from Royal Distributing for having a commanding lead at the halfway point of the Pro Program.

The Amateur program was highlighted by a number of new names and new faces on the podium. There were some very notable finishes by some racers new to the series as well as some that had great success in their first attempt at organized racing.

The youth classes had a big shake up with a number of advancements since last year. We saw the Taplay brothers take two spots on the Pee Wee podium and all Pee Wee riders got their names in the draw for the Marin bicycle draw to be held at the end of the season complements of series sponsor Royal Distributing.  Mini Junior and Mini Senior continue to be ultra competitive we a new cross section of faces after some of last season’s top youth racers have moved on to the beginner class on full size bikes.

The Apex Cycle Amateur Holeshot award was in the Beginner class and Adam Wynia took home $100 for his fastest dash to the first turn. The Vet Junior class was selected for the Wiesner Insurance Fastest Lap Award and none other than series regular Robb Hewitt handily took home $100 cash for his best lap which fell in the last half hour of his race. Robb exclaimed on the podium “This is the first time I have been paid to ride a motorcycle.”

Motopark is always a tough course with its MX inspired fast course and rocky terrain. This event proved no different.

Round Two of the Wiesner Insurance Ontario Cross Country Championship will take place June 3rd in Wheatly, Ontario. The host event organizer Erie Ramblers have a great course set for us. The varied terrain makes for one of the highlights of the Championship.

Please watch www.worldendurocanada for developing news as we get closer to the next round. Wheatly will premier the Moto Cross Country format of two, one hour motos for all adult classes as well as well as an MX gate, live engine start.

We look forward to seeing you at round two of Ontario’s Premier Off-road race series.
